Rebooting Our Homeschool Experience

For the past two years, our homeschool experience with the kids mainly revolved on free online materials as well as the books that we got through a local bookstore. For our grade 1 child, we bought a cornucopia of Grade 1 books in Math, Science, Filipino and English.

The testing materials revolved on tests made from a combination of materials that we got online and some that were created by my wife.

We didn’t rely on any umbrella school for our initial home-school experience and the results were less than satisfying. Though we worked hard and tried to provide materials to them, it was a very time demanding and exhausting experience.

On the positive side, even our four year old child can now read.

Since we made it a point to not have a television inside the house, our children have also developed a certain love for books. In fact, they’re now overly enthusiastic with them. The only downside is that they prefer fantasy books more than their math books. Limiting their access to media could thus be said to be moderately successful.

This Year 2011

It’s going to be different this 2011. For one, we both decided to enroll them in an umbrella school. We found the necessity when we tried going over to the Philippine Department of Education, Lipa City Office to have our children take a diagnostic test.

Going back to the umbrella school, we currently have very limited options due to budget constraints and our far flung location. We will reveal our decision in due time.

Later Today

My wife and kids are going tomorrow to the Philippine School of Tomorrow and I'll let them write about their experience when they come back. For now, it's me with the baby and the four year old child. :)
