1st Roman History Assignment
For their film viewing assignment, I asked the kids to write a short essay about the early history of Rome.

Rome had a mighty empire. It was nearest to Italy. The Romans watched Gladiators for entertainment. They invented aqueducts and concrete. Rome was founded by 2 twin brothers. Their names were Remus and Romulus; while they were young they got rescued by a she wolf. When they grew up they argued about who would be the first king of Rome. So they asked the priests to decide. First, the priests watched birds move. Next, they put both brothers on a hill. Then they waited for the birds to go to one of the twin brothers. The birds went to Romulus, so they said that Romulus would be the first king of Rome. But Remus wanted to be the king and he attacked his twin brother and was killed. So Romulus was first king of Rome.
I don’t think its fun to live in Rome because there is always fighting. And there are many women and men and they can’t choose the jobs they want. It’s also hard because everything’s noisy at night so you can’t sleep at all.

Ancient Rome was one of the most mightiest Empires in history. They started out as wild people with a messy noisy city. They fixed this by making aqueducts.They invented cement. The Romans believed that their city was founded by two little boys raised by a she-wolf. Their names are Romulus and Remus. They asked priests who would be the first king and the priests choose Romulus. Remus didn’t want him to be king so he attacked Romulus but he was killed. Their nieghbours were the Etruscans. They had about 1 million people and the biggest army. They had public bath pools where everyone took a bath.
First they went to a very hot watered pool. Next they went to a cold pool. Last, they went to a warm pool. They used olive oil for soap which they peeled off with a stick. While rome got bigger and bigger they got more slaves. One day, Gouls from France the Romans called them barbarians came and asked for land but the Romans said no. So they attacked and France won.
Years later, Rome came back,and attacked the barbarians and this time Rome won. So the barbarians left. I don’t want to live in rome because I think its hard. I think what the romans did to fix their city was good. I think it is hard for Rome to defend its city. I think that Rome should have given the Gouls just a bit of space. It was a good idea to make the aquaducts and cement.

They made plenty of inventions. They invented cement. They also created the sewers. Their greatest creation is the aqueducts . The aqueducts brought drinking water into the city.
Their vast army had 300,000 soldiers. It was divided into legions. Each legion had 5,000 soldiers. The Romans liked to watch gladiators. Gladiators were slaves trained to fight. They watched them fight at the colosseum. The gladiators fought wild beasts or other gladiators.
The Roman empire was very big. It had conquered most of Europe, Britain, much of the western part of Asia and more. Soon the empire was too big too rule and defend, so the empire was split into two parts, the east and the west.
