Book Report on Oliver Twist

The title of the book is Oliver Twist. It was written by Charles Dickens and illustrated by

George Cruikshank. It was published by Lea and Blanchard in Philadelphia 1839. It is a classic

and a children story. It took me at least a month to finish it.

The story setting is in London 1830. In the book, in London 1830, boys without parents

went to orphanages until they were 9 years old or above. When they left the orphanages they

probably went to workhouses. Back then there weren't any cars or buses and people had to

ride carriages to cover long distances. In 1830 there probably more poor people than rich ones.

The main character is Oliver Twist. He is a nice little boy who is often mistreated. He

isn't selfish or rude. He is a humble boy who is very easy to please. He has many friends.

This is the plot summary. Oliver's mother died when he was a baby and did not tell

anyone who she is. Oliver grew up in an orphanage where the children are mistreated and

half starved. When Oliver is 9 years old, he is brought to a workhouse where Mr. Bumble the

beadle offers to sell him to anyone who is interested in buying him. Later on he is bought by a

coffin maker whom he runs away from after being locked up in a room after he attacked Noah

Claypole for talking about his mother in a mean way. When he reached the city, he met a boy

called the dodger and he brought him to the home of a gang of pickpockets. They taught him

how to pickpocket. One day he was taken outside the house to watch them pickpocket. He was

accused of picking an old gentleman's pocket even if he didn't do it. He was brought to court

and he was declared innocent after fainting. The kind old gentleman brought him to his house

and took care of him. One day after being sent on an errand he is kidnapped and brought back

to the pickpockets home. He is then given to a robber to help him break into a house where he

is shot in the arm by the helper of the owner. He is then left in a pit so the robbers could escape

faster. He is caught and put in a room where no-one could bother him. He is inspected by Mr.

Losborne the doctor. He is taken care of there and he helps them. Then they start searching for

Olivers missing identity. If you want to know the rest I suggest that you read this book.

This is my opinion of it. I think it is a good book. It made me think of London long ago

and it made me feel that poor people shouldn't be mistreated just because they are poor.
